This week’s game is Air Hockey.

I’ve always been a fan of air hockey. The game is fairly simple, yet fun and engaging, especially when the opponents are equally matched. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of air hockey, it’s a pretty simple concept. There’s a big rectangular playing surface that has hundreds of little holes drilled into it, through which air is blown through. On opposite sides of the table there are two goals, one for each of two players who hold “mallets.” On the forced air jets floats a small, thin plastic puck. There is usually a line drawn down the center of the table which is a “no pass” line. When the puck is on your side, you hit it with your mallet trying to get the puck into your opponent’s goal. First to reach a set number of goals wins (usually 10).

Da... bwa?

Even though, somewhat recently, larger tables for 3 or 4 players have emerged, the game is still predominantly for two people. And really, the game hasn’t changed much since it was thought up in 1969. You smack a puck with a mallet and try to get it to carom off the sides of the table in such a way as it sneaks past your opponent’s mallet and into his goal all the while defending against the incoming puck aimed for your goal. Plus there’s always that one shot that hits the wrong side of your mallet and goes into your own goal. I hate those.
